The Montreal West Operatic Society, as a non-profit community-based company, is a place where people with common interests have gotten together since 1939: We are a “family” where serious performance and fun are priorities.
Our mission
Our mission is a simple one: produce shows, teach the theatrical process to all who wish to learn it, give back to the community, and have fun doing all of the above! We are a family and actively encourage all who join to become a “sister and a cousin and an aunt”. Come, join the fun (and occasional mayhem) as we explore the nuances of theatre, Gilbert and Sullivan, and each other!
Our membership
Membership is diverse in terms of age and occupation. Love of singing, working together on the show’s sets, costumes and staging contributes to a joy and esprit de corps that are unique. Our alumni are all over the world, most still singing. We are all volunteers; though our music and stage directors are professionals, our focus on community theatre gives newcomers training with costume workshops, stage movement, diction, and voice. Volunteers are always welcome; whatever you can do, we can probably use!
Charity work
In addition to our enjoyment and yours, our goal is to contribute to the community. Each year we make a donation to The Montreal Children’s Hospital from money raised through the sale of our souvenir programmes and other events. As of 2009, this amount had reached just over $100,000!
